 Critique ARMADILLO (2010)

Armadillo is a documentary that follows a platoon of Danish soldiers on a six month tour to a front line army base in Afghanistan in the war against the Taliban in early 2009.

The camera becomes the unfettered witness to everything these new recruits go through during their six months stunt. We follow these young men from the announcement of their enlisting to their families and friends and the ensuing heartfelt reactions, till their emotional return home. The things Director Janus Metz and his crew are allowed and willing to do in following these soldiers are simply astounding. As perilous as what the most daring front line war reporters have ever accomplished, and perhaps more. Well-crafed, intimate and entirely true, this is a compelling war documentary, perhaps like no other. And not unlike “The Hurt Locker”, this is about the addiction of war. And forget about the question “should they be there or not?”, they are there that's all!
