A few years in the life of legendary football manager Brian Clough. Hovering back and forth between his stint at then 2nd division bottom rooted Derby County in 1967 to his sacking from Leeds United, (Hence the film's title), in September 1974. Based on David Peace controversial book about Clough disastrous Stewardship of Leeds Utd in 1974-He lasted only 44 days on the job. Written for the screen by Peter Morgan, (Frost/Nixon, The Queen, Last King of Scotland), It is fast-paced and light-hearted and if hasn't has the bite of the book, ( the target of a couple of court cases), it makes up for it with confidence and good humour: "I wouldn't say I'm the best manager in the business, but I'm in the top one,". It is mostly about the triple relashionship between Clough, (Michael Sheen), his assistant Peter Taylor, (Timothy Spall), Sam Longson, his crotchety boss at Derby, (Jim Broadbent), and his longtime coaching nemesis, Don Revie, (Colm Meaney). Some casting! If you forget the few inaccuracies, a couple of anachronisms and the heavy-handed portrayal of some of the players such as Billy Bremner, Johnny Giles and Norman Hunter, it is a enjoyable romp, well worth a look, even if you don't know anything about football.
