It would be fair to say, I'm not a trekkie, nor I am anti-Star trek, just a non-trekkie! There's two kind of people out there : Those who like their drop of herbal cha and those who'd rather like a plain cup of builder's tea. I'm one of the latter! Star Trek is space opera and I'm no fan of the genre. There's nothing wrong with the 2009 edition, other than it is "Star Trek Regeneration"! An obvious stab at reviving the franchise, gathering new and younger troops, while befriending and satiating the older enthusiasts. In that sense, it hit the spot! they're all here : Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, (Along with mini-skirt and go-go boots), Scotty, Chekov.... The nonsensical science is there too... Like the "Organic-looking" Romulan spaceship, their technology constituting of bits of junks, (Are the Romulans the "Tinkers" from space?). The parachuting, (when you have beam-transportation), the fists and swords fighting, etc.. One thing is missing though :
The Shakespearean tragedies semblance, the philosophical dilemmas of The Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, which, I though, were the paramount qualities of the 1960's T.V Series. A couple of other things, Chekov absolutely irritating and incomprehensible accent, a "uncharismatic" Kirk and a somewhat unfunny Simon Pegg as Scotty. Having said all that,
the movie flows nicely and is entirely watchable. No Brugelose on my part here. But to carry the risk of being beamed up on a deserted planet by Trekkies bigots and closet ones alike, this not quite my idea of fun!
